5 Signs You Might Need a Root Canal (And Why It's Nothing to Fear)

By Dr. Gauri Patil, BDS

A root canal has an unfair reputation. In reality, it's one of the most effective ways to save a tooth and end pain — and with modern techniques, the procedure itself is comfortable. The key is catching the problem early. Here are five signs worth a check-up.

1. Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold

A quick twinge when you sip something cold is normal. But if the sensitivity lingers for several seconds or minutes after the hot or cold is gone, the nerve inside the tooth may be inflamed or infected.

2. Persistent or throbbing toothache

Pain that keeps coming back — especially a deep, throbbing ache, or pain when you bite down — is a classic sign that infection has reached the inner tooth. Pain that wakes you at night deserves prompt attention.

3. Swollen or tender gums

A small, tender bump on the gum near a tooth can indicate an infection draining from the root. It may come and go, but it won't resolve on its own.

4. A darkening tooth

A single tooth turning grey or darker than its neighbours can signal that the nerve inside has died — often after old trauma or deep decay.

5. A deep cavity or cracked tooth

If decay or a crack reaches the nerve, bacteria follow. Sometimes there's little pain at first — which is exactly why regular check-ups and X-rays matter.

Why a root canal is nothing to fear

Modern root canal treatment is done under proper anaesthesia, so the procedure feels much like a routine filling. It removes the infection, relieves the pain, and saves your natural tooth — which is almost always better than losing it.

If any of these signs sound familiar, don't wait. Early treatment is simpler, more comfortable and more affordable.
